Dairy Cottage is to be found in the beautiful North Devon valley of the River Yeo, mentioned in the book "Tarka the Otter". It stands at one corner of a large courtyard, which until 1978 was the collecting yard of Pitt Farm's dairy unit. When the farm was split up, the milking parlour together with the hayloft above was skillfully converted into the main house, known as Pitt Arches (so named because of the arches through which the cows passed to be milked), and the adjoining cottage, Dairy Cottage. Either side of these are two large enclosed barns that stand now as they must have done for some 300 years. They encircle the courtyard, making a wonderful suntrap and providing parking for our visitors.

Dairy Cottage is very well appointed....

As you walk through the glazed front door into the sunny hall you will find the three bedrooms; one double, one twin and one very large room with three single beds, a small cottage suite and its own Television and Video. Returning to the hall and ascending the stairs you will find a pay phone provided on the landing. The modern kitchen is fully equipped with fridge, electric cooker, dishwasher, food processor and microwave oven etc. The oak beamed dining room can easily seat 6. The washing machine and tumble dryer can be found hidden away in the bathroom which is also on the first floor. The lounge is tastefully decorated and extends into a conservatory offering unspoilt views of the valley. A door from the conservatory takes you out onto the patio and on into the garden. Pitt Arches also boasts a crystal clear water supply that is piped from the hill behind the house. The well has never been known to run dry, even during the drought a few years ago. Relax in these peaceful surroundings with breakfast on the patio or an evening bar-b-que. Should the weather be cooler, enjoy the comforts of full central heating. It is difficult to believe that the cottage is only 1 mile from the High Street of Barnstaple with all it's facilities.

Lots of things to see and do....

Barnstaple is a market town, with a pannier (farm/dairy produce) market held every Tuesday and Friday. On other days, during the summer, Craft and Antique Fairs are held in the beautiful covered Pannier Market, next to the Guild Hall, just off the High Street, which is pedestrianised 10.30am to 4.00pm. Barnstaple now has a modern shopping centre with many of the well known High Street names and many smaller shops selling a wide variety of goods. Not far from the Guild Hall one can drink coffee in the classroom of a school established in 1659 and imagine the "poor maids of the Parish", for whom it was founded, hard at work. For those of a more active nature, one only has to cross the River Taw by way of the ancient Long Bridge to enjoy the pleasures of the North Devon Leisure Centre, with it's Olympic size swimming pool, Squash courts and indoor bowls, etc. Barnstaple claims to be the oldest borough in England, while Pilton proudly boasts - "Pilton was a Borough Town when Barum (Barnstaple) was a marsh!". Should you wish to explore the locality, then step back in time as you walk up the main street of Pilton and on under the arches of the Alms Houses and into the cobbled yard of the Priory Church of St Mary the Virgin. North Devon's Golden Beaches are only a short ride away, or if the countryside is your preference, then Exmoor and Dartmoor are within easy driving distance too. There are leaflets available at Dairy Cottage with details of local attractions such as the world renowned Dartington Crystal Glass Factory, the Royal Barumware Pottery or "The Big Sheep" which is a working farm open to the public.
